Because of the Georgia weather, it is a popular place for spiders to live. Oftentimes, spiders in the home are harmless. However, there are some spiders that can be dangerous, and it’s important to recognize these spiders to deal with them appropriately. Be on the lookout for these dangerous spiders in Georgia.
Brown Widow
As its name suggests, the brown widow is a cousin to the black widow. It has a very similar look to a black spider with a yellow-orange hourglass on the abdomen, but it is lighter in color. A bite from a brown widow is still dangerous as it is neurotoxic, but its bite is less harmful than that of a black widow. For instance, the symptoms of this venomous bite tend to stay localized around the bite and not travel through the body like black widow venom. Therefore, brown widow bites may be painful, but they aren’t life-threatening.
Brown Recluse
The characteristics of a brown recluse are long legs and a light brown body. If close enough, you can see markings on the abdomen that resemble a violin with a black line and black markings. However, getting close to identify the marking is not recommended. Spiderlings look like adult brown recluses and are also dangerous and venomous. A bite from a young or adult brown recluse can range in severity from mild to severe. The most dangerous cases of a brown recluse bite have resulted in hospitalization due to necrosis of the skin.
Southern Black Widow
This black widow is what comes to mind when one hears the term “black widow.” They are black with the red hourglass marking on the abdomen and are easy to identify. These spiders like to hide in dark, damp spaces such as outside debris, wood piles, or cool cracks or crevices. They appear most often in the spring and summer months and are usually more active at night. There has never been a recorded death from a northern black widow bite, but their bites are extremely painful. Symptoms of a bite can include redness, swelling, burning, still muscles, difficulty breathing, nausea, weakness, and more.
